Overview
Henna's history falls back to a few thousands years ago, when people in tropical countries (India, middle east, Africa) found out that the henna leaves were medicinal and further exploration of the plant showed that it had a cooling effect on the skin. So, people in the tropical countries would dip their extremities into the henna paste to cool their body down. This left a stain, from there it evolved into what we know henna as today.

About the artist
I am Sarah, founder of Saarah’s Henna. Hailing from Chennai, India, I have grown up surrounded by a culture that has embraced henna and it’s application for all festivities and occasions. I am a self-taught henna artist who has been practicing for more than 15 years.
Since being a child, I have fond memories of picking up henna leaves and giving them to my mother as she made a henna paste with the leaves and a small ball of tamarind. This paste is then applied using ones fingers to the palm of the hand to make a circle, followed by dots around it and accompanied by henna caps on the fingertips. Until the henna cone was introduced, this was a tradition that was followed for a very long time.
My love and interest for henna and it’s application started when I was ten years old. I could not find anyone to apply henna on me at a wedding, so I picked up the henna cone and tried using the henna cone on myself. From here my interest flourished, as I practised and refined my techniques. It wasn’t long before people started noticing my henna skills and I soon began applying henna for friends and family. I loved seeing the joy I could bring people from henna, and my passion developed. I began to do more and more weddings, and my repertoire grew immensely.
